    Who Should Attend the Forum?

Individuals may include presidents, vice-presidents and associate vice-presidents responsible for international education, directors of international education, international liaison officers, exchange directors and professors engaged in collaborative activities.

Primarily of interest to Chinese and Canadian participants, the Forum is open to those from other countries who wish to share views and models.

    Background
The Government of China has been proactive in developing new programs to benefit their people. Ensuring access to higher education has been a priority. At the same time, Project 985 aims at reinforcing top institutions to ensure that China can also be at the cutting edge in various realms of study.

Scholarships have been a main preoccupation of the Chinese Government. Literally thousands are on offer each year, with a high number of scholars coming to Canada. Many self-sponsored students also choose Canada. Chinese students are the largest international student group in Canada.

Internationally, China has the largest number of students studying a Canadian secondary curriculum, with over 30 schools using the curriculum of one of Canada's provinces. And China has signed education cooperation agreements with all of Canada's provincial governments, demonstrating the interest of the Chinese government in Canada's education sector.

On the reverse, the Government of Canada and the Governments of the Provinces and Territories have expressed keen interest in the education relationship with China. Various trade missions have included a large number of Canadian educational institutions. During the Beijing Summer Olympics 2008, British Columbia and Canada hosted a pavilion that showcased Canadian education. Canada's new education brand was introduced at the China Education Expo last October, the largest education fair in China. Canada was the country of honour at the Expo and DFAIT led the largest single sector mission with 66 institutions participating. In April 2009, CBIE and DFAIT organized an excellent Roundtable drawing together 60 partner institutions fom China and Canada on the margins of the APAIE conference in Beijing. This demonstrates the depth of interest of Canadian institutions in China.

Canada was among the first countries to recognize the People's Republic of China and to establish diplomatic relations with its Government. The Canada-China Scholars' Exchange Program (CCSEP) was established in 1973 as a result of discussions between then Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai and Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. About 1,000 scholars have participated in the CCSEP, bringing new perspectives to their host country and taking enhanced knowledge and understanding back to their home country.
